The Inspiration
In 1960, a piece of land in Northern Virginia owned by the Dunton family, was annexed and zoned for multifamily development. To the family’s surprise, it was worth significantly more than the original purchase price. So, the family was faced with a problem: they could not afford to pay the real estate taxes.
The simple solution was to sell it and take the money. However, The Dunton family knew that if they held onto the land they could create long-term returns and generational wealth. They decided to rise to the challenge and find a solution that created an opportunity.
The Duntons took the road less traveled and entered into a Joint Venture with the right partners to develop a multifamily asset. They enjoyed 40-years of positive cash flow and consistent refinances which allowed for tax-free cash returns, and paved the way for Bonaventure to begin.
Bonaventure Begins
In 2000, Dwight Dunton encountered another complex problem that needed a creative solution. The family’s asset was in need of capital improvements.However, their partner’s stewardship was no longer aligned with the Dunton family. Dwight Dunton, III raised capital and purchased the asset, and from that, Bonaventure was born.
Our Namesake
The Bonaventure name has special meaning. The Dunton family immigrated to North America in the 1600s on a ship called Bonaventure. The name Bonaventure meant “ship of good fortune,” and this sentiment lives on in the American dream we continue to build for our clients.
